lyrics

Jason, in my dream you're restored
In a dorm room with our backs to each other
We get dressed for the second night of prom
I'm wearing a Shawn Kemp replica jersey under my tux jacket
My bow tie undone and hanging limp around my neck
Jason's wearing moccasins, no socks
One black-and-mild dangling from his lips
A second one behind his ear
He catches me in the mirror
Holding a white vest up to my chest
Smiling with his cheeks,
He pushes air through his lips and makes a whistling sound
As it sweeps across the opening of the cigar's plastic tip
He says:

"You wore that last night, besides we both know you're more of a cummerbund guy"

It's almost 4am when we get to the church
In that long burning candlelight and it's lapping reflections
In the high stained glass windows,
Jason's dark brown eyes are like black holes in reverse
A young man restored, his teeth have been reset
His hair his puffy and clean and peppered with whitish-gray
The church congregation is an older crowd
But Jason quickly wins them over
As he makes the rounds from one banquet table to the next
Chatting up elderly couples, patting the priest on the back

The tables are filled with all sorts of pastries
And bowls jelly-filled candy
I trail Jason, stuffing the confections
Into my mouth and coat pockets
With dawn seeping through a crack in the lost horizon
We slip out a side door and go our separate ways

Oh Jason, Oh Jason, if only we could lie down
If only we could lie down in the daffodils
